About Us

The Eisner Transformative Harsh-Environment Electronics Research (ETHER) Laboratory specializes in the design, fabrication, and development of advanced (ultra)wide-bandgap semiconductor devices including solid-state logic, sensors, and MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems). We are dedicated to exploring and harnessing the unique capabilities of emerging materials to meet the increasing demand for highly reliable micro/nanoelectronic sensors and systems. Our focus is on transcending the inherent limitations of traditional silicon electronics by investigating fundamental physics of alternative semiconductors and deploying innovative device architectures. Our research aims to eliminate the need for thermal management and radiation shielding, while increasing feasible device lifetimes, to enable more efficient and versatile technologies.

Our work addresses critical new frontiers where extremes in temperature, radiation, and/or chemically corrosive ambient exist, including space exploration, new techniques in radiotherapy for cancer treatment, environmental monitoring, nuclear fission and fusion, hypersonic aircraft, and quantum computing. By advancing device performance and integrating these technologies into practical systems, we contribute to cutting-edge applications that require robust and high-performing solutions in challenging environments.
